Research

Adam Silverstein specializes in the history of the Near and Middle East, primarily from Late Antiquity until the Middle Ages. Most of his research is comparative, focusing on Islamic cultures within broad historical contexts. His research and publications have focused on the following broad themes:

  1. Pre-Modern Islamic political history, with particular attention to administrative institutions.
  2. Arabic geographical literature in the pre-Modern period.
  3. The comparative study of Abrahamic religions, with particular attention to Islam’s place in the religious mosaic of the Near East.
  4. The reception of Biblical materials within pre-Modern Islamic civilizations, with particular attention to Biblical books that are set in ‘eastern’ courts (viz. Esther and Daniel).
  5. Continuities from the Ancient Near East to the Islamic world.
